My central heating has 2 zones:

Zone A = Ground floor

Zone B = 1st floor and 2ndfloor

This means that if I use my central heating:

I need to heat at least all the rooms in the 1stfloor and 2nd floor, which costs money

The boiler and central heating have to be on all day (shortening life through wear and tear)

I have to rely on a thermostat in the hallway on the first floor, I can’t precisely regulate the heating in the home office room independently

Warm clothes

If it’s only a little chilly, a warm jumper, thick socks, slippers or Sherpa blanket can keep you warm and snug.

Just remember that what you wear needs to be appropriate for video calls!

Electric Oil filled radiators

I use an electric oil filled radiator to heat my home office. Oil filled radiators are inexpensive to purchase, have low running costs are very safe. This also allows me to regulate the temperate of a single room, making me more comfortable.

The oil filled radiator I have doesn’t have a start or stop function, so I have added an Alexa enabled smart plug to it, which I have scheduled to turn off at 5.15pm every weekday (I finish working at 5.30pm). This is a safeguard against me forgetting to turn the heater off at the end of the day, which would waste money. the smart plug also allows me to track how much electricity it is using, so I can monitor its running cost.

Radiator based central heating

If you do want to use radiator based central heating, you can do some checks and maintenance to ensure that they are running as efficiently as possible.

Bleed the radiators

Over time, radiators can capture trapped air, resulting in degraded performance. At least once a year you should check for this by using a standard radiator key (or one that also captures the escaping water). It’s really easy to do, here are some instructions.

Add radiator reflectors

A lot of heat is wasted when radiators emit heat against the wall they are attached to. Instead of heating the wall, you can use radiator reflectors to redirect this heat back into the room.

They get installed behind the radiator (so you can’t see them), are easy to install and will save you money over time.

Add radfans

The radfan sits on top of the radiator and blows the warm air into the room. They are very cheap to run and easy to fit – just place it on top of the radiator and plug it into the mains. The fans turn on or off based on how hot the radiator is. It might be worth given them a try as they have a good rating on Amazon and you can always return them if they don’t perform as well as you would like.

Have you heating system serviced

To help prevent issues from occurring and to keep your system running optimally, it is important to have the system inspected on a regular basis. This is typically once a year by a qualified technician.

If the heating system does go wrong, it can be expensive and time consuming to fix. Having it maintained on a regular basis give you a fixed cost and peace of mind.

If you need a new heat pump, I can recommend the Grundfos UPS3 15-50/65 130, as I researched and fitted it myself recently.

Smart thermostats

With central heating systems, it is advisable to replace the ‘dumb’ thermostats with smart ones.

Smart thermostats can control your heating, cooling and hot water, primarily in a ‘hands-off’ approach. From this experience I found that most companies provide staff with poor quality chairs, despite not having any back problems, I would often have a sore back at the end of the day.

At home, I bought a HermanMiller Mirra chair – it’s now about 15 years old, but it looks and actions as if it were new. Although it was expensive, I consider it one of the best purchases I’ve made for my home office. My review is:

It feels like a quality product

I haven’t had any backache, even after working very long hours

I haven’t had any mechanical or material faults or issues with it – even after 15 years

No squeaks or rattles

I don’t foresee the need to replace it any time soon, but if I did, I wouldn’t hesitate to replace it with the same (updated) model

Simply put, your chair is the item that you will have the most contact with. It affects your posture and therefore your health. A good quality chair will last much longer than multiple ‘okay’ quality chairs, saving your money in the long-term.

Checklist for a home office chair

Here is checklist of items to consider when choosing a chair for your home office:

Is the height of the chair adjustable (check the minimum and maximum values if it’s adjustable)

Do you want a chair with arms? If so, how much adjustment should they have?

Will the arms of the chair easily fit below the desk?

Do you want a chair with adjustable tilt/recline?

Do you want a chair with a high back?

Do you want a chair with a head support?

What sort of lumbar support would you like?

How much overall adjustment do you want the chair to have?

Do you need wood or carpet castors?

Do you want a mesh or cushioned seat?

Would you prefer airflow or a warmer feel (i.e. padded seat and back)?

How long can you try it at home and return it for a full refund?

How long is the warranty?

I have my chair adjusted for height and arm-rest position – I am very comfortable and supported and rarely change these settings. The only setting I change on a regular basis is the recline position. – I set it to a fixed, upright position when typing, but allow partial or full recline when on calls or watching videos.

Specific use cases

Of course, your might have additional requirements, for example as part of your job, you might need to move around often, you might need to lean forward more (e.g. for architect/design/drawing) or you might have a medical condition where it’s beneficial for you to have added support.

Try before you buy (if you can)

Whichever chair you get, ideally you will try before you buy – or make sure you can try it at home and return it if needed, as the look and feel of chairs are a personal thing and you will be spending a lot of time with it!

In this video review of three $200 budget office chairs from Ikea, David gives a good review of each, mentioning what he likes and dislikes about each of the styles.

Think about posture and support

Your tasks or medical condition might require chairs with specific features or support. It’s the starting point for the design, from which everything derives – such as the placement of IT equipment, lighting, audio and storage.

What to consider when choosing a desk

Size and shape

First, you need to decide how large the desk should be. Generally speaking, the larger the better.

You might want a corner desk, curved desk or one that needs to be custom-made to fit the space – see our article ‘Home Office Location’ for ideas on choose the right office location.

Some questions to think about are:

What will you put on your desk? e.g. laptop, laptop stand, mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers, drink, wireless chargers, stationary

What will you put under your desk? e.g. Nothing, PC, storage drawer, filing cabinets

Will you have a printer on your desk, or will it be on a separate desk or cupboard?

Will you sit, stand or walk at your desk?

A fixed-height desk will only allow you sit at it.

An adjustable-height desk can allow you to sit or stand at the desk. You can also use an adjustable desk in combination with a treadmill to burn some calories whilst you work.

This video explains that the difference in calories burned whilst sitting or standing is negligible. Walking on a treadmill burns about 200 calories an hour, which a few hours day is significant, but it comes at the cost of being less productive.

For most people, the best option will be to have a fixed desk and to get some exercise at lunchtime or outside of work hours. People with health issue might like a height-adjustable desk that provides the ability to stand for some of the time. A treadmill desk will be good for a small minority of people.

For some work (e.g. crafting), a desk that you can sit or stand at might make sense. Height adjustable desks can come in manual or electronic formats – and you can retro-fit adjustment to your current desk – just make sure you have enough height above the desk for any objects (such as monitors) that you have on it.

If you are interested in a standing desk, I highly recommend you watch this video from David Zhang, where he reviews all the pros and cons of using a standing desk, including what to look out for if you are thinking of buying one. This article lists the top 10 standing desks.

Desk material

Desks typically have a wooden surface, but can also be made of plastic, metal or glass. It should have a smooth surface and be sturdy enough to support monitors, laptops and other equipment.

Some people get a kitchen worktop from Ikea and fix it above legs or filing cabinets/drawers.

If you like to scribble your thoughts as you work, you might want a desk with a whiteboard surface.

Choosing the support

Your desk might need to support a lot of weight, so it needs a suitable amount of support. This might be in the form of legs, or it could be filing cabinets.

Choose a colour

The colour of the desk might be determined by the material – you might want it to be made of a wood that matches other wooden items in your room. You might want a metal surface, glass surface or a surface with a colour that stands out. Or you might want a ‘neutral’ black or white desk that you can accent with colours, such as green accessories (mouse mat, pen holder, etc.).

Examples of desk surfaces

Additional features

You might want a desk with one or more of these features:

Pull-out drawer for your keyboard and mouse

Integrated wireless charging pad

Storage drawers

Integrated cable management

LED lighting

Finding inspiration for your perfect desk

Pinterest is a great site to see lots of ideas. This includes energy, mood, concentration, pleasure, comfort, productivity to name a few. Doctor Robert Gerard pioneered research, which suggests that every colour has a specific wavelength, and each of these affect our body and brain in a different way.

There are so many external and internal distractions at home. It is therefore important to have colours in your home office that provide the most positive environment for focusing and getting your work completed, whilst giving a sense of calm and wellbeing.

Using the right colour, and the correct selection and placement can seriously affect feelings, attention, and behaviour. Obviously, there are many configurations for a home office setup, and it may not be practical to repaint a whole room. If painting a room or space is not a feasible option, there are many other ways to include the colours best suited to your needs. This can include something as small as a bracelet or postcard on the desk to a canvas or coloured desk.

Below is a selection of the 3 colours green, orange and blue. Each have different qualities they bring to your home office space, so enjoy reading about each one and deciding which colour pallets best suit your needs.

Green

Green is an excellent colour for improving concentration. Low wavelength colours such as green also promote restfulness and calm. Now, you obviously don’t want to be too restful on the job but being in a calm state also improves efficiency and focus.

Some studies have shown that people who work in green offices have higher rates of job satisfaction. A study, led by Doctor Kate Lee, examined 150 university students. She gave the group a boring, monotonous task that dragged their attention span to a breaking point, pressing a series of numbers over and over as they read off a computer screen. The students were told not to press keys when the number three appeared on the screen. Then break time came, and in a 40-second window half of the group viewed a green roof, while the others looked out onto a bare concrete roof. The research showed that students who looked at the green view made fewer errors and had overall better concentration. Doctor Lee hypothesises that the green roof provided a ‘restorative experience’ which helped boost the mental resources of the students involved in the study (1).

Adding a restorative green screen, a forest scene, or a small green canvas on your desk could provide a moment of revitalisation for you if you are struggling to concentrate.

Here are some green office items that will help create this environment for your home office.

Green desk mat (waterproof)

Buy on Amazon UK.

Lime green desk caddy

Buy on Amazon UK.

Artificial green plant

Buy on Amazon UK.

Green canvas art

Buy on Amazon UK.

Orange

According to ancient Feng Shui principles, orange is a "yang" colour and it will stimulate focus, concentration and promote organisation. This makes it the perfect shade for a home office. However, it is not just the colour that matters, but how bright it is. “What defines whether a colour is stimulating, or soothing is not the colour, it’s the intensity. A strong bright colour will stimulate, and a colour with low saturation will soothe,” Angela Wright, a colour psychologist said. So, if you are hoping to get your work done quickly, go bold! (2)

Orange is generally quite a bright colour so if you have your home office in your bedroom, it may be better to include green or blue instead of orange, as you don’t want to be too over stimulated when it is bedtime! If you do want to include some orange in a room you primarily want as calming, you can use accessories such as an orange bracelet, a small canvas that can be turned around after work finishes or a throw on your chair that can be put away when it is slumber time!

You can also use orange in different way to help alertness and concentration……orange juice!

A glass of orange juice in the morning can improve alertness and concentration over the course of the day, according to new research from the University of Reading.

The study saw a group of 24 healthy males aged 30-65 drink a flavonoid rich orange juice or a control drink on two separate days. On each day, the participants were randomly allocated to consume either the orange juice or the control drink. Cognitive testing before drink consumption, and two and six hours after, were then carried out.

‘Response speed' in the study group was significantly improved at two and six hours post drink. Their ‘attention' was also enhanced after six hours while the control group became less ‘alert' throughout the day compared to the study group (3)

Here are some examples of orange accessories you can use to get that energy and focus going.

Real orange tree

Buy on Amazon UK.

Artificial orange plant

Buy on Amazon UK.

Orange desk mat

Buy on Amazon UK.

Orange desk caddy

Buy on Amazon UK.

Blue

Blue is often associated with calming environments such as the seaside, sky, rivers and open spaces. As you will have seen, they all offer similar functions with the main differences being design, water tank size, price (I have not included the price as they are constantly changing on amazon) and Wi-Fi availability.

Once you have chosen your preferred diffuser, it is time to fill it with scents that will energise, inspire and motivate you.

The essential oils

Enjoy reading about each oil and deciding which ones you would like to try and most suit your scent likes. This selection of 5 are all good for energy and clearing the mind. The oils can be used separately or combined. I would recommend a maximum of 3 oils combined if blending.

It is important to use only 100% pure essential oils (not artificial fragrance oils) as the artificial fragrances don’t provide the benefits of the pure essential oils. Quality is also important to ensure the most effective benefits and that they are ethically sourced and made. Some oils are quite expensive but remember that you are only going to use a few drops each time you put the diffuser on, so they should last a while. If you find you are using a particular oil more than others, it is often cheaper to purchase them in larger sizes (most are 10ml to begin and you can purchase 50ml, 100, 200ml onwards).

The key safety information when using essential oils are; do not use directly on the skin, do not ingest, keep out of reach of children and pets and less is more!

For each 100ml of water in your diffuser you can use up to 5 drops of essential oil. So if you are using 3 essential oils you could do 2 drops of 2 oils and 1 of the other to make 5 drops in total. Remember the oils are very concentrated and you don’t want to overpower your home office!

Lemon Essential Oil - refreshing and invigorating

Lemon

Lemon is a great essential oil for your home office.
